Membership is a way that p4c Hawaiʻi can grow its extended virtual community of inquiry.  It helps us: 

• Identify people who are interested in learning more about p4c Hawaiʻi and connect them with each other and the UH Uehiro Academy. 
• Develop and pilot resources for educators and researchers who are not able to visit Hawaiʻi
• Create an intellectually safe asynchronous community of inquiry so that members can discuss relevant issues and share ideas.

Zoom Talk Story with p4c Hawaiʻi founder Dr. Thomas Jackson (Dr. J):  Everyone wishes they could spend more time with Dr. J, so he has graciously agreed to host several informal “talk story” sessions over the course of this semester.  There is no agenda; these sessions are an open opportunity for dialogue and learning from Dr. J’s 40-plus years of p4c experience.

We are offering sessions at two different times to better accommodate the global reach of p4c Hawaiʻi. 

• Tuesdays at 11am HST: 9/21, 10/19, 11/16, 12/14
• Thursdays at 3pm HST: 9/23, 10/21, 11/18, 12/16

One Community of Inquiry discussion that I'll always remember happened several years ago at the Schofield Barracks Army post. Many of my students had recently returned from combat. They had been fighting in Iraq during the initial stages of the war. While there, one of them said, he had almost died. And in this moment, as his life flashed before his eyes, he made a promise to himself: When I get back home, I am going to appreciate my life and my family more. Too often, he realized, he took them for granted and put the wrong things first.

Now he had been home for six months and, he discovered, he was breaking his promise. Slowly but surely he was slipping back into his old habits and routines. Once again he wasn't appreciating his family enough. I want this, he said, to be our discussion question: Why do we take things for granted?

The other students nodded their heads. They had also had similar experiences. They too wondered this: Why do we take things for granted?
Morrie Schwartz writes this: "...most of us all walk around as if we're sleepwalking. We really don't experience the world fully, because we're half-asleep, doing things we automatically think we have to do." (Tuesdays with Morrie, p. 83)

Sometimes we get so busy rushing around; trying to get our papers done, trying to study for a test, going to work, and running errands. Sometimes it seems, as John Ortberg says (in The Life You've Always Wanted), that we spend much of our time preparing to live and little time actually living. Sometimes it seems, as Morrie says, that we're only half-awake. Too often it seems, as my student said, we take things for granted.

Do you ever take things for granted? Do you ever feel like you're half-asleep and aren't fully living life? Do you ever feel like you spend too much of your time preparing to live and too little of your time actually living? If so, why do you that you (or other people) do this? And, most importantly, how do we wake up? How does one fully appreciate life and keep from taking things for granted?

Alternative Question: If you don't want to talk about yourself, you can write about a classmate or someone who you know. What kind of smarts do you see in him/her? And how do you think that he/she can make a difference?
